SRI LANKA MAPS 1

Sri Lanka Map

SRI LANKA  IN A NUT SHELL TODAY by bunpeiris

Is there anybody in the island that can bring evidence from modern politcal history of ours that politicans have delivered what they promised? The only exception is Don Percy Mahendra Rajapakse: wiping out terrorism; end to the war. And Tamils wanted his head for that-gon rela joined them; USA wanted head his for aligning Sri Lanka with China- gon rela joined them and had the Hero of Modern Sri Lanka defeated on 8th January 2015 in the presidential race.

Who was the only man who stood against west; who was the only man who refused to be bullied by India, who was the only man who had a working relationship with India; who was the only man who had courage, tenacity, strategy, aggression and diplomacy to overcome all local and international oppositions and obstacles?
Who was the only man who renewed the friendship originated with Rubber-Rice pact that was carried out  half a century ago? Who was the only man who took the tigers head on?
He is the only LION of Modern Sri Lanka. He is the Hero of Modern Sri Lanka; he is the Prince Diyasena whose arrival was prophesied centuries ago and reminded in "Revolt in the Temple" by D. R. Wijewardena [Don Charles Wijewardene]. bunpeiris 21 December 2014

To the hell with Cost of Living, damn the corruption and wastage, blast the neopotism, I will still vote for him; he saved the island and nation from three decades of terrorism and war; he saved the island nation from Asia's Second Pol Pot.When the regimes that preceded couldn't have even a pond built, he had so much built and and goes on.It is zillion times better to be aligned with China than become a dog of the Western Countries hell bent to tear the island apart. bunpeiris 20 November 2014

See in an international perspective: weaker regime, stronger Tamil diaspora and western countries hell bent in breaking up Sri Lanka. Or you can see in the local perspective: has any of the regimes/party since those of D.S. and S.W. R. D. tried to solve the issue of cost of living; had any of the regimes/parties been free of corruption, wastage, malpractise and neoptism?

“Ah, what an age it is! When to speak of trees is almost crime. For it is a kind of silence against injustice."
To Posterity: Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956)

Right, while we are talking about cricket, sanctions will be enforced by USA & UK against Sri Lanka for aligning with China (Yes, it has done) and exports to west will be dealt a deadly blow below the belt. Sri Lanka is bound to suffer an economic crunch. Meanwhile in spite of the INCOMING CASIONS THAT WOULD TEAR APART THE WHOLE SOCIAL FABRIC OF THE ANCIENT ISLAND NATION, heroin containers & alcohol containers caught red handed, corruption, bribery, malpractice, wastage, skimming the wealth of the nation on the Top Lombargini Gear, Mahinda Rajapkse will still remain the Hero of Modern Sri Lanka for saving the nation & island from 30 years of terrorism & war, 30 years of suffering at the hands of Pol Pot the Second, 30 years of suicide bombs & blood, 30 years of not knowing your son, daughter, father, mother would come back home alive after work.

  The World Over Today
Such is the pathetic situation, the poet has no business with nature: time has come for him to speak of the ground reality of the humanity.
Such is the suppression, the novelist has nothing in common with love: time has come for him to speak of injustice.

Sri Lanka's banks have no shame
In front of the posh banks- national, international & state- are cheap banners calling the public to pawn their jewelry at the bank each one claiming higher advance for each gram of gold; claiming theirs are the lowest interest rate upon the loan given on pawned jewelry.
Once upon a time, banks used to extend pawning facilities only as an additional service to its clients in need. Today, the banks have taken up the role of pawn brokers too over and above the business of leasing motor vehicles.
The suppressed class is in such dire straits, survival depends on the remainder of its jewelry. People who once had decent living-economical conditions have now started to scrape the barrel. Meanwhile the hoard of buffaloes by the stream where Vidiya Bandara drowned Samudra Devi enjoy their pork barrel to the hilt.

Perversion of Just Rule & Law
Quote the newspaper "The Island" of Sri Lanka, 5th December 2012: Financial Review
Since the mid 1980s Sri Lanka has given
completely tax free cars to elected rulers
tax slashed cars to state workers
while taxing ordinary citizens to a very high levels, in a perversion of just rule of law.
Unquote "The Island"

Local Transportation in Sri Lanka
The pathetic state of the government transportation has resulted in the increase of continued import of Indian Bajaj three wheelers -[used for  taxis]  in Sri Lanka creating chaos, creating  unbearably congested traffic in the main streets. The uncalled for factor of taxi fares has added further burden to the cost of living chaos of the suppressed class.Over and above all those, three wheeler taxis have made matters easier for hired criminals and drug pushers.

Tourism in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka Holidays is on the rise. Yet industry needs to be improved in leaps and bounds.
Listen to the sexperts
Compared to Malaysia and Indonesia, Sri Lanka is currently 30-40 per cent higher in terms of the latter’s hotel charges, Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) President Mahen Kariyawasan said in an interview with the Business Times on Wednesday at his Nawala office. He noted that while Sigiriya would charge US$30 as entrance fees from visitors, Dambulla costs $25 and likewise for Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. But he pointed out that in comparison entrance to the Taj Mahal would cost only $15.
Judiciary in Sri Lanka
Like most of the MIGHTY in Sri Lanka, the majority of Judiciary too choose and select what is BEST for them, not what is RIGHT. When the HIGH & MIGHTY says to those who got favors it's payback time, they cry Foul Play.
People are attracted to issues that concern them-not those that attract the fiefdom of a President or Minister or Parliamentarian or Judge or Lawyer. Experience has taught that dignitaries struggle to preserve their habitat of power and make it look, as if, it is for a cause...a cause, they try to make out, is for the people. Let's not fool ourselves; their cause is primarily intended in looking after them-selves!
Gomin Dayasiri, son of Neil Quintus Dias: The Island, Sri Lanka, 22 December 2012
Several lawyers who spoke to Colombo Telegraph stated that while they deplored interference with the judiciary, Kariyawasam should not have accepted a political appointment in the first place. He was first appointed as Chairman of Sri Lanka Insurance and later as Chairman of the National Savings Bank. Never in the history of Sri Lanka’s judiciary had a spouse of a judge of a superior Court accepted a political appointment, they stated.
“when you sleep with dogs, you have to get up with fleas” a former judicial high up stated.
"It is not the masses who have to be held in check, but the parliamentarians and lawyers, so that they do not betray the masses"
Rosa Luxemburg (1871- 1919)
In Sri Lanka- parliamentarians, lawyers, politicians, media, judiciary and INGOs.
Sri Lanka's Skills, Wiles & Guile Honest Overwhelm India
6th April 2012. Sri Lankan Cricket Team, which has consistently been losing finalists in One day International World Cups & T20 World Cups, since winning the One day International Champions in 1996 under the captaincy of indomitable Arjuna Ranatunge at Lahore, finally triumphed  over India, with great death over bowling skills coupled with wiles & laced with guile honest to win T20 World Cup at Dhaka, in a fitting tribute to Kumar Sangakkara & Mahela Jayawardene, who retires from T20.

SEPTEMBER 2012 Sri Lanka lost to West indies in the T20 Cricket World Cup Final in Colombo.unlike to 1996 World Cup Wining team of Sri Lanka, the present cricket team of Sri Lanka cannot finish the job. Cricket is a game, but then loosing finals in a row, will not bode well for the game.
Perhaps the Sri Lanka Army can dish out a winning formula.
The south-western and southern coastal belts are teaming with with softball cricketers [natural stroke makers] who  lift the ball straight up overhead or six after six. All Sri Lanka has to do it get them into play the leather ball with gloves and pads. They don't need helmets and other battle armour.

Politics:
the world's most fearsome violator of human rights, the bomber of nuclear bombs, preach human rights to Sri Lanka. Foul play, to say the least.

On Russia Today television channel's interview Engdahl stated that the 2011 Egyptian Revolution was orchestrated by the Pentagon to facilitate Barack Obama's Middle East foreign policy and Egypt had turned to a worse situation after Hosni Mubarak was overthrown. According to Engdahl "The ultimate goal of the US is to take the resources of Africa and Middle East under military control to block economic growth in China and Russia, thus taking the whole of Eurasia under control."He believes that the Arab Spring is a plan "(...) first announced by George W. Bush at a G8 meeting in 2003 and it was called "The Greater Middle East Project"."

Double Standards in US Foreign Policy vs Sri Lanka

Ranking member of US House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaega on Tuesday (Feb 26,2013) expressed his deep concerns over the double standards applied in the US foreign policy toward Sri Lanka.

SRI LANKA ASKS THE WORLD TO REFRAIN FROM BEING UNFAIR

Canada helping ‘evil forces’ with threat to boycott Commonwealth meeting, Sri Lankan envoy says

Wagiswara, Sri Lanka’s high commissioner to Canada said Sri Lanka needed support after facing “separatist terrorism for nearly three decades,” and ongoing post-conflict challenges.
“Notably certain separatist elements within the diaspora including in Canada, still continue to relentlessly disseminate anti-Sri Lanka propaganda and lobby political leaders and other decision makers,” said Wagiswara. “Hostile criticism and unfair targeting of Sri Lanka by Canada only serves to further strengthen the evil forces working against Sri Lanka and does not contribute in any manner to the ongoing rebuilding and reconciliation process in the multicultural society of the country.”
Wagiswara added that his country was looking to all members of the Commonwealth to “uphold principles of objectivity, understanding, mutual respect and the equality of sovereign states.”

Education: commotion in higher education system
Local Railway Transportation System: unsastifactory.
Local Public Road Transportation System: Mihin Air needs to be closed down so that those funds can be to diverted for revival of local road transportation. Our country cannot afford more than Sri Lankan Airlines already in red.
Health Services: government hospitals being overcrowded, business makes it their day
Cost of Living: talk to the people -they are desperate.
Corruption: that began in the regime of Srima Bandaranayake had no intervals since then to this month.

At the helm in Sri Lanka:-
A nationalist leader with no fear. He loves his people of all races and loved by the majority of people of all races in spite of  the major deficiencies of the government. He is an unknown quantity to the west.
Development of the country: on, mostly in terms of cultivation and road construction.

Suicide in Sri Lanka
New official data shows that Sri Lanka still has one of highest suicide rates in the world, with almost 4,000 people killing themselves per year, or about 11 per day. Dr. Neil Fernando, who heads the country’s National Institute of Mental Health Promotion, released the figures in a Suicide Prevention Day seminar on September 10. The majority of victims, he reported, were aged 15 to 44.
Poverty, joblessness, high debt burdens and other social problems—the main factors behind the high suicide rate—are rampant throughout the country.

Ethnic harmony in Sri Lanka
Who tour in Jaffna? Sinhalese
Who visit the Tamil Sivar Restaurants most? Sinhalese
Who work with the Tamils side by side in Colombo? Us
Who buy from Tamil Gold shops in Colombo most? Sinhalese
Who are the main traders & sellers in Colombo: Tamils. Who are the buyers? Sinhalese
Who call Tamil school boys "Mallie" (Sinhala: younger brother)? soldiers of Sri Lanka Army

Civil Inequality in Sri Lanka
Different segments of the citizens are treated in such a way, those who have been fortunate to receive right royal treatment, demands for more; those who have been suppressed are given to shoulder more burdens. The government do change, modify, repeal, introduce new rules and new policies on taxes to suit its great mass of politician businessmen so that they could exploit the openings to get richer at the expense of the wealth of the country, the taxes on the masses, upon the sweat, tears & blood of the suppressed.
The rich get richer and richer; the poor get poorer & poorer. The poorer pawn everything they have so that they could buy bread without butter for the day. The banks have taken up the mass scale opening of pawn shops in every little bazaar. The gap between the have and have not go on widening as had been with the previous governments since regime of Sirima Bandaranayake.
In this context the current government is no better than any of the previous. And an incoming government, if any, would be worse.

Having said all these, as at present, given the western pressure on Sri Lanka and American plots to bring Sri Lanka to its knees, the patriots of the nation have no alternative but to support the president who saved the nation and its faith.
All you can do is work within the system, and suffer the system, though no one has the right to ask you that. bunpeiris

Law for the Rich Ends Up In Injustice to the Poor

The law protects the rich and makes sure no justice is done to the poor.

SATURDAY, 09 FEBRUARY 2013 Justice Ministry Secretary Kamalini De Silva faulted the police and the acting Magistrate with regard to the unfortunate incident where a 13 year old school girl was produced in court by the Horana Police on charges of having stolen eight coconuts.Ms. De Silva said that in the first place the girl should have been referred to the Mediation Board instead of being produced in Court.
Meanwhile, police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said according to section 367 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the case could not be referred to the Mediation Board as the girl had committed an offence for which police bail could not be given.
Mr. Jayakody blamed the media for giving “out of proportion publicity” to the incident.  EH!

FINANCE COMPANIES HAS BEEN PLUNDERING THE NATION SINCE 1988
The Central Bank fails to recover billions from 13 default finance companies
Well documented evidence indicates that the CB has failed to recover the refinance facilities provided to 13 default finance companies during the period 1988 to 1994. While the total advances made to these companies amounted to Rs. 2.7 billion, the total outstanding balance as at December 31, 2004 amounts to Rs. 7.3 billion.

It had been recommended that affairs of Golden Key Credit Card Company should be halted and further investigations should be carried out. However, the recommendations were not implemented under the present Governor Ajith Nivad Cabraal. In October, 2009 the company collapsed.

As a result about 9000 depositors of the company lost more than Rs.26000 million.
The statement made by Ms. Shirani Thilekewardene reveals that had recommendations given by Mr. Sunil Mendis’ committee been implemented the loss to depositors could have been minimized.

Robert Knox & The Bible

Colonialists in British Ceylon; Robert Knox & The Bible; Joseph Stalin & The American church

I
IMAGE: Warrior King Rajasinghe the Second, (1629 – 1687), the third king of the kingdom of Kandy, Sri Lanka, who held a melange of Europeans captive (open air -closed kingdom prisoners) within the natural fortress of Kandy surrounded by hills and looped by River Mahawel Ganga; no way out.

I have never ceased to be amazed at the acute observation, precise analysis and sheer brilliance in writing brought to us by the multitude of British colonialists in British Ceylon (1796-1948). They weren’t professional writers: they were professionals from all walks of life: planters to soldiers; irrigation engineers to road builders. The descriptions of Ceylon, travel narratives, hunter’s stories, planter’s tales, biographical & semi autobiographical books narrated by the British in Ceylon and the Ceylonese British have now become colonial classics of Sri Lanka. Among the numerous publications, at the forefront are: An Account Of The Island Of Ceylon by Robert Percival, London, 1803; An Account of Interior of Ceylon by John Davy, London,1821; Eleven Years In Ceylon by Major Forbes, London,1840; Ceylon by James Emerson Tennent, London, 1859; The Wild Elephant by James Emerson Tennent, London, 1867 (dedicated to Major Thomas Skinner, the builder of Kandy Road); Ceylon by An Officer, Late of Ceylon Rifles,1876, London; Fifty years in Ceylon by Major Thomas Skinner, London, 1891; The Buried Cities of Ceylon by S. M. Burrows, London, 1905; Ancient Ceylon by H. Parker, London, 1909.

The serious students of English Language in Sri Lanka would do a world of good to themselves should they opt to read these classics since much could be derived from those works of prose in English Language. Furthermore it would open up opportunities to gain a wealth of knowledge of Colonial Sri Lanka.

Then again, In terms of learning English, one of the most fascinating lessons that can be learned by students of English in Sri Lanka comes not from those British colonialists, but from Robert Knox Jr.(1641 – 1720), who had been an open air captive in Kandy, Sri Lanka since 19 November 1659 for 19 years till his escape to England with Stephen Rutland, one of his companions in Kandy. Knox’s celebrated book “An Historical Relation of the Island Ceylon”, was written during the voyage back to England in 1680 and was published in the following year. Robert Knox Jr. was only 14 years of age in the beginning of his captivity in Ceylon. From where did his proficiency of English Language come from?

IMAGE:A Sinhalese translation of Knox's Ceylon by Premachandra Alwishttp://www.lakehousebookshop.com/pdesc.php?id=88

Of course, there were other British captives in Kandy, the gateway to the Central Highlands and all of them were allowed to communicate and interact with one another. Hence Knox wouldn’t have lost fluency in English at all. But then Knox’s fascinating narration, in no way plays second fiddle to a literary work of an erudite man of letters. It is true, that historian and biographer John Strype, Knox's cousin, helped him to prepare the book for publication. But then again, John Strype wasn’t a co-author at all. In the circumstances we can only deduce that Knox must have been reading the centuries old Bible in English, left behind by the Portuguese (1505-1640)  when they lost Fort of Colombo to the Dutch (1640-1796), that he laid his hands on soon after being taken captive, day after day for 19 years in Sri Lanka then called Ceylon.

Above is a historical novel written by a Sinhalese in Sri Lanka based on Knox's historical narrative.

IMAGE:  White langur (not albinos).leaping in the canopy of UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sinharaja Forest, was discovered by Wildlife Conservation Society, Galle (WCSG). Robert Knox as well as James Emerson Tennent have made reference to White langur in Ceylon in their literary works.

Had Knox developed a habit of reading the bible daily during his captive years in Sri Lanka Holidays Kandy? The answer could perhaps be found in the appreciation expressed by Knox at the sight of Bible. It must be given in his own words:-

“The sight indeed of this Bible so overjoyed me, as if an angel had spoken to me heaven; to see that my most gracious God had prepared such an extraordinary blessing for me, which I did, and ever shall, look upon as miraculous; to bring unto me a Bible in my own native language, and that in such a remote part of the world-where His name was not so much as known, and where any Englishman was never known to have been before. I looked upon it as somewhat of the nature with the ten Commandments He had given the Israelites out of heaven; it being the thing for what whereof I had so often mourned-nay, and shed tears too-and than the enjoyment whereof there could be no greater joy in the world to me.

Joseph Stalin (1878 -1953), the dictator of Soviet Russia (1922-1952), who discouraged practice of religions in his land, in the year 1943, while dispatching Andrei Gromyko (1909 – 1989) to the post of second-in-command at Soviet Embassy in U. S. A., advised him to attend the Sunday Service at Church during his tenor so that he could make rapid progress in learning English language further.
"Comrade Gromyko you should pay a visit or two to an American church and listen to their sermons. Priests usually speak correct English with good accents. Do you know that the Russian revolutionaries when they were abroad, always followed this practice to improve their skills in foreign languages?"

Gromyko never did. But then, the serious students of English Language in Sri Lanka ought to heed the advice of late Stalin to late Gromyko. After all, Christian sermons are free of charge.

JESUS OF TIBET

JESUS OF TIBET: MYSTERY YEARS REVEALED

The Gospels record Jesus age twelve in the temple. Then about age thirty at the river Jordan. That leaves approximately seventeen years unaccounted for. During those so called lost years, the child ‘increased in wisdom and stature,’ Luke wrote. But was it in the carpenter shop at Nazareth?
Nicolas Notovitch's Accident Near Himis Paintings © SteamChip http://www.harekrsna.com/sun/features/05-12/features2451.htm

According to ancient Tibetan manuscripts, Jesus secretly withdrew from the home of Mary and Joseph at age thirteen. Young ‘Issa’ joined a merchant caravan. Destination: India and the Himalayas. At Juggernaut, “the white priests of Brahma made him a joyous welcome. They taught him to read and understand the Vedas, to cure by aid of prayer, to teach, to explain the Holy Scriptures [1] to the people, and to drive out evil spirits from the bodies of men.
Notovitch writes in his Journal as his translator interprets the ancient language read by the lama from the Issa scrolls. http://www.harekrsna.com/sun/features/05-12/features2451.htm

• Buddhist scholoras documented “The life of Saint Isssa’ two thousand years ago.
• Nicolos Notovitch discovered the long-lost document in 1887 at the Himis monastery in Ladakh.
• Swami Abhedananada published a Bengali translation of the Himis manuscript in 1929.
• Nicholas Roerich quoted the same verses in a 1929 travel diary of his Asian expedition.
• And in 1939, a beaming lama at Himis presented a set of parchments to Elisabeth Caspari with the words:
“These books say your Jesus was here”
http://nipunscorp.com/2011/10/20/adventure-trekking-mountaineering-in-ladakh/
Ladakh (land of high passes) is in Jammu and Kashmir, the northernmost state of the India that lies between the Kunlun mountain range in the north and the main Great Himalayas to the south. Being closed in by mountain ranges of rock and ice dividing the Indus Valley from Tibet, Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, in Ladakh, the human habitation is restricted to narrow strips of greenery clinging to the rivers that drain down from mountain glaciers. The people therein at Ladakh are of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir of India.

Now you can read the controversial stories of these travelers together with the original Buddhist scriptures on the most important events that shaped the life and work of the savior Jesus Christ.
A historical breakthrough that will shake the foundations of modern Christendom!

Above is a gleaning from the book titled “The Lost Years of Jesus” and subtitled ‘Documentary evidence of Jesus’s 17-year journey to India, Nepal and Tibet written by Elizabeth Clare Prophet. ISBN-13: 978-81-8495-019-9, 1984
Jesus' journey to the East as per the book

Above text is annotated on both sides of a single leaf sandwiched between the two title pages and three pages of Critical  Acclaim in the beginning of the book.

Moreover, following gleaning is off the rear cover of the same book:
Ancient texts reveal that Jesus spent seventeen years in the Orient. They say that from age 13 to age 29 he was both student and teacher. The events of his pilgrimage from Jerusalem to India were recorded by Buddhist historians.
For the first time Elizabeth Clare Prophet brings together the testimony of four eye witnesses of these remarkable documents. With the thoroughness of a determined disciple turned detective she tells the intriguing story of the international controversy that arose when the manuscripts were first discovered in 1887 by Nicolas Notovitch-how experts “proved” they did not exist, only to have them rediscovered in this century by Swami Abhedananda, Professor Nicolas Roerich, and Mme Elisabeth Caspari.
Now you can read in one volume the chronicled and legends of what Jesus did and said in India, Nepal, Ladakh, and Tibet prior to his Palestinian mission-and the heartwarming personal accounts of those who made the trek to the Himalayas and brought back the most revolutionary message of our time.

Notes, Bibliography and Letters From Readers

Given below are the first three entries of the critical reviews of this groundbreaking wealth of information, the fascinating story of the lost years of Jesus.
(1) The first review is by no other than John c. Trever, Ph. D., Director of the Dead Sea Scrolls Project of the school of Theology at Claremont, California, U. S. A. Here are his words:
“An interesting addition to the ongoing investigation into the lost years of Jesus. The sources for the traditions of Jesus’ journey to the East apparently grew out of medieval observations that similarities in the teachings of Buddha and Jesus were not a coincidence that two traditions-but must have had some sort of logical connection. I would like to suggest another chapter be added discussing not only what Jesus did in his early life but some believe he did in Kashmir after the Crucifixion.”
(2) The second review is by John Dependahl, Chairman of the Religion Department, Seabury Hall Hawaii, U.S. A. http://www.seaburyhall.org/
“The book may well change the way academia, clergy and the laity view the son of God. Moreover, it may well set a foundation for a transcultural hermeneutic that unites the religious disciples of East and West. Guaranteed to set off an array of theological fermentations! I heartily recommend it.”
(3) “I have read the whole book. It is interesting and very important. We should be grateful to you for publishing this book”

The third review  (3)  is by the illustrious and most pious Buddhist monk Balangoda Ananda Maitreya, former vice-chancellor of university of Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Buddhist monk Balangoda Ananda Maitreya wasn’t simply a scholar.  Balangoda Ananda Maitreya (August 23, 1896 – July 18, 1998)  had been known to have attained a certain lower plain in enlightenment in line with Buddhism by means of two forms of Buddhist meditation called Samatha meditation and Vipassana meditation. It has been recorded that he had once witnessed god Skanda, the deity of Kataragama, Sri Lanka.
The gods such as God Skanda that has been embraced by some of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka stand in sharp contrast with the almighty or eternal or gods in the main religions of the world. These gods go through the process of death and rebirth, just as human beings do. Most possibly those gods are superior beings living in other planets.
There is no almighty God in Buddhism: there is no one to hand out rewards or punishments; there is no judgment day.
Buddhism isn’t a religion that demands blind faith, worship and allegiance to a supernatural being.
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
Buddha was a man who attained supreme enlightenment. Buddhism focuses entirely on the practical ways to end suffering caused by the cycle of birth, death and rebirth.
Furthermore Buddhism doesn’t contribute towards the notion of permanent individual soul that keeps being reborn into new bodies in the process of reincarnation. Everything is  impermanent.

[1] Scriptures
The Western terms "scripture" and "canonical" are applied to Buddhism in inconsistent ways by Western scholars: for example, one authority refers to "scriptures and other canonical texts", while another says that scriptures can be categorized into canonical, commentarial and pseudo-canonical.

A rather more definite division is that between Buddhavacana [Pali, Sanskrit and Sinhala: the Word of the Buddha. It refers to the works accepted within a tradition as being the teachings of the Buddha]. and other texts. In Theravada Buddhism, the standard collection of Buddhavacana is the Pali Canon or Tipitaka: Pali language texts which form the doctrinal foundation of Theravada Buddhism, and is the main body of scriptures for Buddhists. Tipitaka is translated as "three" (Ti) "baskets" (pitaka), in the Pali language. The three baskets are: the Basket of (monastic) Discipline; the Basket of Discourses; the Basket of Further Dhamma.
Despite the differences among Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana schools of Buddhism, traditional Buddhists of all schools recognize the Pali suttas as being the most uncontested records of the Buddha’s teachings.
With a view to preserve the purity of the doctrine of Buddha Buddhist councils has been held since the final extinction of Gautama Buddha.

While the Sinhalese were inscribing the greatest contribution to the humanity. The hoards of painted barbarians were still fighting the two legions of Julius Caesar at the beachhead  of modern Wilmer on the coast of Kent (55 BC) of England.
Objective: to secure the words in Buddha in its purest form in writing in the background of recurrent invasions by marauding Dravidians from Southern India and severe famine resulting in death of a significant number of Buddhist Monks and populace at that time in Sri Lanka.

Friends of Opposite Gender

Everything is possible is human condition: supreme eminence to ultimate debasement; selfless love to demonic barbarism not to forget sexual love to platonic love.
Platonic love between the friends of opposite gender and open declaration of same hasn’t been uncommon in his story of the humankind, even in the Muslim countries.

Following is an excerpt from the book titled “Indentity and Violence” by Amartya Singh

Religious Identity and Cultural Variations

There can also be vast differences in the social behavior of differen persons belonging to the same religion, even in fields often thought to be closely linked with religion. This is easy to illustrate in the contemporary world, for eample, in contrasting the typical practices of traditionalist rural women in, say Saudi Arabia and those of Muslim women in urban Turkey where head scarves are rare, dress codes that often similar to those of European women.

It can also be illustrated by noting the vast diffenrnces in the habis of socially active women in bangaldesh and the less outgoing women in more conservative circles in the very same country, even though the persons involved may all be Muslim by religion.

These differences must not, however, be seen simply as aspects of a new phenomenon that modernity has brought to Muslim people. The influence of  other concenrns, other identities, can be seen throughout the history of Muslim people. Consider a debate between two Muslims in the fourteenth century. Ibn Battuta [1], who was born inn Tangier in 1304 and spent thirty years in various travels in Africa and Asia, was shocked by some of the things he saw in a part of the world that now lies between Mali and Ghana. In Iwaltan, not far from Timbuktu [2], Ibn Battuta befriended the Muslim qadi, who beheld an important civic office there.

Ibn Battuta records his digust wiuth the social behavior in the qadi’s family:
One day I went to the presence of the qadi of Iwaltan, after asking his permission to enter, and found with him a young and remarkably beautiful woman. When I saw her I hesitated and wished to withdraw, but she laughed at me and experienced no shyness. The qadi said to me: “Why are you turning back? She is my friend.” I was amazed at their behavior.
But the qadi was not the only one who shocked Iban Battuta, and he was particularly censorious of Abu Muhammad Yandakan al-Musufi, who was a good Muslim and had earlier on actually visited Morocco himself. When Ibn Battuta visited him at his house, he found a woman conversing with a man seated on a couch. Ibn Battuta reports:
I said to him: “Who is this woman?” He said: ‘She is my wife.” I said: ‘What connection has the man with her?’ He replied: “He is her friend.” I said to him: “Do you acquiesce in this when you have lived in our country and become aquainted with the precepts of the Shariah?” He replied: “The association of women with men is agreeable to us and a part of good conduct, to which no suspicion attaches. They are not like the women of your country.” I was astonished at his laxity. I left him and did not return thereafter. He invited me several times, but I did not accept.

[1] Ibn Battuta
The Adventures of Ibn Battuta, a Muslim Traveler of the Fourteenth Century By Ross E. Dunn
Ibn Battuta visited Ceylon (Sri Lanka) on his way to Ma’bar so that he might go on pilgrimage to the top of Adam’s Peak, the spectacular concical mountain that loomed over the southwestern interior of the island. “That exceeding high mountain hath a pinnacle of surpassing height, which, on account of the the clouds, can rarely be seen,” wrote John de Marignolli, the Christian monk who passed through Ceylon just a few years after Ibn Battuta. “But God, pitying our tears, lighted it up one morning just before the sun rose, so that we beheld it glowing with the brightest flame’ Ibn Battuta recalls that he  first saw the peak from far out to sea, “rising up into the sky like a column of smoke.” The mountain was scared to Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists alike, and pilgrims of all three faiths climbed together to the summit to behold a depression in the surface of the rock vaguely resembling the shape of an enormous foot. For Buddhists it is a trace of the Great God Shiva, and for some Christians it belongs to St. Thomas. In Muslim tradition God cast Adam and Eve from the seventh heaven in disgrace, and when they tumbled to earth the man landed hard on the peak on the mountain, leaving an impress of his foot in the solid rock. He remained there for a thousand years atoning for his sins, until the Archangel Gabriel led him to Arabia, where Eve had fallen. The man and the woman met on the plain of ‘Arafat and later returned  to Ceylon to propagate the human race. Adam was not only the first man but the first prophet of Islam as well, and it was to reverence him that Muslim pilgrim trekked to the Foot, As they still do today.

[2] Timbuktu
In its Golden Age, the town's numerous Islamic scholars and extensive trading network made possible an important book trade: together with the campuses of the Sankore Madrasah, an Islamic university, this established Timbuktu as a scholarly centre in Africa. Several notable historic writers, such as Shabeni and Leo Africanus, have described Timbuktu. T
Timbuktu is a town in the West African nation of Mali situated 15 km (9.3 mi) north of the River Niger on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. The town is the capital of the Timbuktu Region, one of the eight administrative regions of Mali. It had a population of 54,453 in the 2009 census.
Starting out as a seasonal settlement, Timbuktu became a permanent settlement early in the 12th century. After a shift in trading routes, Timbuktu flourished from the trade in salt, gold, ivory and slaves, and it became part of the Mali Empire early in the 13th century. In the first half of the 15th century the Tuareg tribes took control of the city for a short period until the expanding Songhay Empire absorbed the city in 1468. A Moroccan army defeated the Songhay in 1591, and made Timbuktu, rather than Gao, their stronghold. The invaders established a new ruling class, the arma, who after 1612 became independent of Morocco.
In its Golden Age,  Timbuktu's numerous Islamic scholars and extensive trading network made possible an important book trade: together with the campuses of the Sankore Madrasah, an Islamic university, this established Timbuktu as a scholarly centre in Africa. Several notable historic writers, such as Shabeni and Leo Africanus, have described Timbuktu.
However, the golden age of the city was over and it entered a long period of decline. Different tribes governed until the French took over in 1893, a situation that lasted until it became part of the current Republic of Mali in 1960. Presently Timbuktu is impoverished and suffers from desertification. Several initiatives are being undertaken to restore the historic manuscripts still kept in the city. Meanwhile, tourism forms an important source of income.

Egg or Hen Solved

The Enchantress of Florence: Salman Rushdie

The First minister and greatest wit of the age greeted him at the Hiran Minar, the tower of elephants’ teeth. The emperor’s sense of mischief was aroused. ‘Birbal,” Akbar said, dismounting from his horse, “will you answer us one question? We have been waiting a long time to ask it.” The first minister of legendary wit and wisdom bowed humbly. “As you wish, Jahanpanah, Shelter of the World.” “Well then,” said Akbar, “Which came first, the hen or the egg?” Birbal replied at once, “the hen.” [1]
Akbar was taken aback. “How can you be so sure?” he wanted to know. “Huzoor,” Birbal replied, “I only promised to answer one question.”

The first minister and the emperor were standing on the ramparts of the city looking out at the wheeling crows. “Birbal,” Akbar mused, “how many crows do you imagine there are in my kingdom?” “Jahanpanah,” Birbal replied, “there are exactly nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine.” Akbar was puzzled. “Suppose we have them counted,’’ he said. "and there are more than that, what then?” “That would mean,” Birbal replied, “that their friends from the neighboring kingdom have come to visit them.” ‘And if there are fewer?’ “Then some of ours will have gone abroad to see the wider world.”
A linguist was waiting at Akbar’s court, a visitor from a distant Western land: a Jesuit priest who could converse and dispute fluently in dozen of languages. He challenged the emperor to discover his native language. While the emperor was pondering the riddle, his first minister circled the priest and all of a sudden kicked him violently in the backside. The priest let out a series of oaths- not in Portuguese, but in Italian. “You observe, Jahanpanah,” said Birbal, “that when it’s time to unleash a few insults, a man will always choose his mother tongue.”
“If you were an atheist, barbel,” the emperor challenged his first minister, “what would you say to the true believers of all the great religions of the world?” Birbal was a devout Brahmin from Trivikrampur, but he answered unhesitatingly, “I would say to them that in my opinion they were all atheists as well; they merely believe in one god less than each of them.” “How so?” the emperor asked. “All true believers have good reason for disbelieving in every god except their own,” said Birbal, “and so it is they who, between them, give me all the reasons for believing in none.”

Footnotes by bunpeiris
[1] On 19th September 1991, when the spectacular discovery of the mummified corpse of a late well clothed [and  complete with a leather pouch not unlike the one, you Sri Lanka Holidays tourists fasten onto your waist belt] and well equipped Stone Age man [ killed following a wound sustained in a skirmish with a rival group], now popularly called iceman [death: 5300 years ago; height: 5 feet 2 inches; weight:110 pounds; age at the death: 25-35 years; well tattooed: therapeutically] melted out of a glacier in a small mountain passage named Tiesenjoch, high in the Tyrolean Alps, was made by the German national Helmut Simon (67) & his wife  Erika Simon 300 feet on the Italian side, the first scientist to examine the cadaver was forensic pathologist from the University of Innsbruck, Austria, Prof. Rainer Henn (64). The second scientist to examine ice man was Dr. Markus Egg, a prehistorian at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz, Germany.

Thanks to the Iceman, today we know who came first: Hen. Birbal was right. [ What the hell are you smoking, man?] But then Ice man wouldn’t leave all of us content. Though Ice man solved the perennial question of who came first; egg or hen, he created another mystery: a series of death consequent to the monumental discovery.
A year later Rainer Henn, who placed the Iceman in a body bag with his bare hands, was killed in an automobile accident on his way to a conference where he would discuss the results of his work on the Iceman. He was the first to die among those associated with the ice man.

Helmut Simon, 69, who, along with his wife, discovered the Iceman's body died second. The hiker returned to the region to celebrate winning a £50,000 court battle over rights to the mummy. He set out in fine weather but a blizzard set in and he froze to death — just like the mummy. Since he hadn’t signed the court papers his widow wasn’t granted the reward.
Kurt Fritz [52], a mountain guide who supposedly led Dr. Henn to the Iceman's body and who was said to have uncovered the Iceman's face was killed in an avalanche.
Rainer Hölz [47], a filmmaker who made a documentary about the recovery of Ötzi from the ice for the ORF network. He died of a brain tumor.
Dieter Warnecke [45], who headed the rescue team looking for Simon's frozen body. He died of a heart attack just hours after Helmut Simon's funeral.
Konrad Spindler [66], who led the scientific team that recovered and examined the Iceman in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1991 died from complications related to multiple sclerosis.
Tom Loy [63], a molecular archaeologist who discovered human blood on Ötzi's weapons and clothing and who was featured in a National Geographic documentary about the Iceman died of a hereditary blood disease, first diagnosed about 1992 (that caused blood clots to form) in the year 2002.

The series of deaths that was brought about following the discovery of Ice man, recalls such unexplained phenomena to have occurred in the past. The most famous series of deaths was related to discovery of a cadaver is related to Tutankhamun in the 20th century. The opening of on November 29, 1922 was to follow with a series of death starting from the death of George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, the financial backer of the search, on 5 April 1923) and the unexplained mystery was called “The curse of Tutankhamun”.

However, Howard Carter, English archaeologist and Egyptologist, who discovered and opened the tomb of the 14th-century BC pharaoh lived till 1939.
Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859 –1930), a Scottish physician and writer, most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, is reported to have said the death connected to the tomb of Tutankhamen could perhaps was caused by a deadly fungus planted therein, at the time of the closure of the tomb, to punish the grave robbers.

While there have been many such unexplained mysteries related to discovery of ancient treasures around the world, Sri Lanka too had its share of the mysteries. One of those little known tales are related to Somawathiya Chethiya: the Death of a Relic Hunter in Ceylon
When it was revealed that the Sacred Right Tooth Relic of Buddha was enshrined in the relic chamber of Somawathiya Chethiya (Stupa), Giragama Nilame or  Kudamudiyanse Giragama of Dalada Maligawa Diyawadane Nilame (Appointed Guardian of the other existing tooth relic (The Holy Temple of the Tooth) (1882–1897) launched a search for the lost stupa. The misdirected intention of the Guardian of the Holy Temple of Tooth at Kandy was to secure the custody of the right tooth relic & to deposit it alongside the left tooth relic at Holy Temple of Tooth at Sri Lanka Holidays Kandy. It is said that the guide lost his sight on the day the team reached the stupa. During the excavation at Somawathiya Stupa cobras surfaced & a swarm of wasps attacked the team. While fleeing from the wasps the Guardian of The Holy Temple of Tooth was injured. He later died of the wound.

Relics of Buddha wouldn’t be disturbed or destroyed by a human hand or its agents: those relics are protected by the superior beings living in other worlds, who listened to the discourses of Buddha a couple of millenniums ago.
